Grilled charcoal in history

The first source of meat grilled over charcoal was during the reign of King Jeongjo during the Joseon Dynasty.

In the winter of 1781 (the 5th year of King Jeongjo’s reign), Jeongjo called the Confucian scholars of Gyujanggak, Seungjeongwon, and Hongmungwan to hold a beef stove.

As it is nowadays, a charcoal-fired furnace was placed in the middle and seasoned with oil, soy sauce, green onions, garlic, and red pepper powder on thinly sliced beef.

The Jeon-rip-tu(전립투)is usually made of cast iron or grain stones, and there are ring-shaped handles on both sides for ease of lift.

The name Jeon-rip-tu(전립투)is also called the false bone because its shape is similar to the state in which the hat is turned upside down. 

When boiling hot pot in Jeon-rip-tu(전립투), it pours the broth into the concave part of the center, chop the seasoned meat, fish and shellfish, and vegetables such as mushrooms, onions, and minari into the round edge, place them neatly, and boil them just before eating.

Detailed literature on Jeon-rip-tu(전립투) is recorded in detail in the book ‘Jeongjoji’ of the executive economic journal of Poongseok Seo Yoo-gu, who wrote the great white dictionary of Joseon in the 18th century.
